Mosaic Madness Blanket

MOSAIC MADNESS BLANKET

Please note that all terms are UK and not US based so you will need to substitute dc to sc and tr to dc if you are not used to using UK terminology

This blanket is made by using double and treble crochet stitches. As its a mosaic all the dc's will be stitched in the back loop only.

This blanket has been made with a wing and a prayer lol so there is no real fixed way of making it into a bigger blanket unless you work it out for yourselves.. but this isn't hard to do.

My blanket, perfect for lap width is 139 stitches in width.
This works out to 136 stitches for actual stitch count later, 2 for border stitches and 1 for the first turning chain

My individual patterns are all of differing sizes. So they can't readily be calculated into a standard pattern if you are needing a larger size.

What you need to do is work out how many will go into your stitch count (ie in my example 136) and then depending how many you have left over, you can either add some between the individual patterns or at either end... Putting the extra stitches at the ends is probably easier.

So for example if one pattern is 12 stitches across. 136 divided by 12 is 11 plus 4 (or 12 x 11 = 132 leaving 4 stitches from 136)
So you can have 11 pattern repeats and put 2 stitches at either end of the blanket.

So i am going to give you the pattern based on my blanket of 136 stitch count but you can alter it as explained above.

First i will apologise but i have just added photos of the actual graph pattern... i don't have an online pattern to use.

So with each pattern i have used separate colours for each line. So in this pattern i used blue to show the line and the next purple. So you can see clearly each line. When you have purple on a blue line it means that the above line will have a treble which has covered the double below it. So the picture graph shows how it will turn out but you need to follow the written pattern.
The crosses on the graph shows where a treble crochet will be used. The ones without crosses will be double crochets.

BS is Border Stitch
RIght (and first border stitch) is a chain stitch in the first dc of the row below and then in the same stitch you put a double crochet.

Left (and last border stitch) is a double crochet with a chain stitch in same stitch pulled securely tight.

These border stitches are technically no 1 and 138 of this blanket and dont count in your stitch count of 136. You can practically ignore them once stitched.

Leave about 3-4 inches of yarn at each end to do the twist finishing border unless you prefer a different border.

Plus remember that with mosaic crochet you start and finish each row with a new piece of yarn ie you cut your yarn at the end of each row.

Please remember these patterns have been put on here for free and have not been tested by anyone other than by myself. So if you decide to have a go at making this blanket, then it is with that in mind and I would be grateful for any feed back but please... keep it friendly as i am doing this for free.

So lets start!!

1)
Chain 139 (to alter size you can chain as many as you like as you will need to alter patterns anyway to fit but just remember 3 of the stitches wont count in the pattern itself)

2)
Now dc into the second stitch along and carry on with dc's along the length of the chain ie 138 dcs. Remember to use back loops only with dcs!

3) cut your yarn

4) Now do your first rows in the same colour including a border stitch at each end. Its really up to you how many you do but these just form a solid border at one end of the blanket. You will do the same at the other end of the blanket to match.

I did 4 rows including the chain row on my blanket

Now for the pattern

SMALL DIAMOND

This pattern is on a recurring 12 stitch basis so this will mean you have 4 stitches to put at the ends. ie 2 at each end

On odd numbered rows stitch 2 dcs after the first border stitch and 2 dcs before the last border stitch

On even numbered rows stitch 2 trs after the first border stitch and 2 trebles before the last border stitch
Please dont forget these extra stitches otherwise they will throw your pattern out!!!

So this is the first pattern completed, I will add more on as soon as i can.

LINKING THE PATTERNS

you can do whatever you like between each of the patterns.

Rows of dc... perhaps in alternate colours. The colour just finished and the colour yet to come..

What i did is to do 1-2 rows of dc in the main colour (remember my second colour i just kept to white and just changed the main colour), and then i did alternate dc and treble in the previous main colour and the next row in alternate treble and dc in the new colour and i did four rows of this so that it blended in to the next section.

If you want to do this as well... make sure if you start on a dc, you finish on a treble. And its a good idea to count your stitches at this point...so easy to miss one and this will then throw the blanket out.

TALL MOUNTAIN

Wow this is a big design so you only get 6 mountains across but they do join up nicely.

For this design you will need to stitch 5 extra stitches at each end for it to work.
21 x 6  = 126 so therefore 10 stitches over, 5 either side.

Odd rows: stitch 5 dcs after the first border stitch and 5 dcs before the last border stitch.

Even rows: stitch 5 trs after the first border stitch and 5 trs before the last border stitch

Please dont forget these extra stitches otherwise they will throw your pattern out!!!

3 BAR GATE

For this design you will need to stitch 3 extra stitches at each end for it to work.
10 x 13  = 130 so therefore 6 stitches over, 3 either side.

Odd rows: stitch 3 dcs after the first border stitch and 3 dcs before the last border stitch.

Even rows: stitch 3 trs after the first border stitch and 3 trs before the last border stitch

Please dont forget these extra stitches otherwise they will throw your pattern out!!!

This pattern is very similar to one produced by Tinna who does the Havanna Cal pattern so the inspiration is definitely down to her and not my idea although i produced this pattern and graph.

LARGE SNOWFLAKE

For this design you will need to stitch 1 extra stitches at the start and none at the end for it to work.
15 x 9  = 135 so therefore 1 stitch over, 1 at the start only.

Odd rows: stitch 1 dc after the first border stitch.

Even rows: stitch 1 tr after the first border stitch.

Please dont forget these extra stitches otherwise they will throw your pattern out!!!

Row 1)  BS (15 dc x 9) BS

Row 2)  BS (1dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 1dc x 9) BS

Row 3)  BS (2dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 2dc x 9) BS

Row 9)  BS (1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 5dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr x 9) BS

Row 10) BS (3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc x 9) BS

Row 11) BS (2dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 2dc x 9) BS

Row 12) BS (1dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 1dc, x 9) BS

Row 13) BS (1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 5dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr x 9) BS

Row 14) BS (3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 3dc x 9) BS

Row 15) BS (2dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1tr, 3dc, 1tr, 2dc, x 9) BS

Row 15 is only needed when you have finished the pattern completely. So if you are doing the pattern twice, you start again after row 14 and only do 15 when you have decided to no longer repeat
